Slow and perhaps noisy but who cares about noise and many other reviews suggest image quality (looks great) is worth the slow scan speed. Pros: Ships in manufacturer packaging but arrived intact anyhow (always inspect your box.) Very straightforward setup to do the basics like copy and print, or scan to an image file. I would have no qualms buying another one if that's where the research leads me.

In any case, this scanner will be my baseline for "re-shopping" if I have to replace it. Nothing appears broken from where it smacked the sidewalk, but I've yet to get it hooked back up and test it. until I moved last month and someone let it fall out of their car. I've hauled the scanner from room to room and have never had "transportation issues". Overall Review: Owned this since March 2008.
EPSON PERFECTION 4490 SOFTWARE
I've used software from other companies: except for using a separate 3rd party software with a hefty price tag, the Epson software works great compared to what is provided by other companies. When accessed thru Photoshop, scanning software completes the requested scan then quits the plug-in must be launched for each scan. The underscan/oversized glass noted by other reviewers is an annoyance which does require adjustment to your placement technique. Hardware/software setup was straight-forward and easy.Ĭons: It is definitely not a "backpack" scanner and will own some real-estate on your desk. Construction is sturdy for it's price range (it has been the bottom item in stacks of books, and been moved from room to room with no trouble). Back-light in lid and slide/negative caddy are great includes. I've never had a 30 minute scan I believe that may be more a function of what else is on your USB/speed. Speed is good factoring quality of resulting image and price of the unit. Epson's software is easy and simple to use, even in advanced mode - stand-alone or called from Photoshop. Pros: Excellent image quality, particularly color quality. I could live with the lousy software, but the poor construction makes it unusable.Īs others have said, Newegg rocks! There are lots of places on the Web to spend my money, but Newegg is one of the first places I check when I need computer stuff. I expected better quality from Epson, especially in light of its then-$200+ price tag. This one replaced a non-photo scanner as I was planning to scan those old negatives I have laying around. They only got replaced as technology improved. Overall Review: I have had a scanner for nearly 20 years, and past (non-Epson) scanners have operated flawlessly.

Several Linux distros recognize the scanner is attached but won't configure it. Research prior purchase indicated this scanner worked w/Linux. The software leaves a lot to be desired and is clunky to work with.

A quick "dope slap" frees it and it will then scan. Recently it has started making a ratcheting sound as if the belt is slipping on the gears & doesn't scan. I also get the screeching during scanning as reported by others. Pros: Decent document scanning in color or b&w, Glass hasn't fallen into the scanner.Ĭons: Poor quality construction. 128MB RAM (512MB recommended for Digital ICE), 450MB of available hard disk space minimum (1GB recommended for Digital ICE), CD-ROM drive (4x or faster), available USB connection.Īdditional Information Date First Available
